Spencer grew up playing the sports his older brother, Dr. Karl, played and was a stellar student-athlete all along. He broke out of his older brother’s shadow while in high school earning all-American honors and winning a state title in wrestling while also earning all-state accolades in football. He went on to Michigan State University to play football and wrestle but ultimately transferred and graduated from University of North Carolina as one of the all-time winningest heavyweights while pursuing a degree in exercise physiology. He went on to earn his doctor of osteopathy from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech and is now board certified in both family medicine and obesity medicine.
